The start of something

SEPTEMBER 2023, acting for stage and screen course

The start of something...

Before starting the course I was apprehensive, not knowing who I would meet or how I would feel- wither I would enjoy the course or find out it wasn't right for me. But after the first day I realised all my doubt had been for nothing, being welcomed into a room full of opportunity
and creativity. I was especially impressed and excited by just how much we were going to work on- wither it be peter pan, a historical horror experience at the globe to even getting to take part in national theatre connections!, all things that I know would expand and deepen my skills as a young actor. This is not even to mention the fact that this is only in the first year, and that I  would yet again get the chance to create and learn even more the following year round. I was also incredibly drawn to how encouraged it was to explore your ideas and personal projects, as that's something I want to delve into and use as a way to make the most out of what I'm going to learn.

who am I as an actor at this moment in time:

The first memory I have of performing was taking part in a local panto from the ages of around six to ten. There was never anything brilliant performed, but I always remember the sheer amount of joy I would get from just getting given a character and then being told to "become them"- you never had to audition and it was primarily  adults who got main roles, but I honestly don't think I realized I was just part of the ensemble, because I distinctly  remember my little six year old self dancing with the rest of the children like my headline of "maid 5" was the main character. I would pack so much into a nameless character that they once gave me the role of a worm called "woody wood worm", who's role was purely just to annoy all the other characters and make the audience laugh- which of course was something I enjoyed massively. my character was never allowed to speak, meaning I had to over exaggerate my facial expressions and movements to make the audience laugh. I would say this is when I realised how much I loved acting and performing.

When it comes to moments in my journey so far that stand out to me as important the shows I did with my secondary school would have to be mentioned, because personally I feel that they introduced me to what it's like to work in a theatre and the pressures that come with that. Which is something I took with me when I went to Glasgow to do my intake course for nyt, as we got the privilege to perform in the tron theatre- so the previous experience with theatre felt like preparation for this. I learned so much from my intake course with nyt, but the thing I found most beneficial was delving into naturalism, as that's the style of acting that I enjoy the most as it forces you to go deeper into characterisation so you can fully understand the character and perform as naturalistic as possible. Not only did I develop a deeper sense of skill, but I also developed my confidence within performing, which is something that I feel prepared me and eased the nerves when starting collage.
