Connections!
This week marked the start of our 2025 National Theatre connections play called "Normalised", getting a chance to read through the play and understand the characters and the plot in more detail. This play is quite different from our last and has a stronger focus on the performance of the actors compared to the ensemble and directing of the show. It relies on focused naturalistic performances to portray the story and convey the complicated LGBTQIA+ themes.
Because the show does follow an LGBTQIA+ story line we had a little session on terminology and queer experience, hearing a few stories from one of our queer tutors about what it was like growing up gay in the 80s and 90s and facing homophobia. This was really helpful for us as a group, because it allowed us to build off experiences that we may of not had which was really beneficial- especially because homophobia is something that the characters battle with consistently throughout the play, which means the actors playing those characters need to understand those experiences.
