OCD Research
Studies show that OCD can run in families: between 10%-20% of children who have a parent with OCD will develop OCD themselves (but 80%-90% will not), though we must be careful not to simply assume that this is caused by genetics. For example, many learned traits also tend to run in families, such as what language is spoken and family religious beliefs. For this reason, researchers believe that a combination of genes and environmental factors play a role in the development of OCD
The environment a person is in and interacts with plays some role, since the types of obsessions and compulsions that people have differ for members of different cultural, ethnic, sexual, and religious groups

Regular talks abut her own achievements or life experiences without regard for the other characters she's saying it too.

What I infer
The only mention of Hesters Family is through her aunt and her dad. There is no mention of a mother figure or any siblings, only of her ill grandmother that is mentioned in her monologue.
- I think Hesters parents have gone through a divorce when she was younger and as a result her mother is no longer in her life anymore, meaning her dad has become her soul parent and has had a bigger parental influence on her(explaining her more mature gentlemanly phrases. Hester also Idolises her dad which is another reason for her picking up some of his speaking patterns). I think her grandad has died a couple years before her granny starts to get sick. As a child Hester has had to loose people that are beneficial in her life, especially her mother but then the loss of her grandad as well. So when her grandmother gets sick, she builds up the need to prevent her losing another important person- which is when her OCD starts to develop (as explained in her monologue). Its the environment of uncertainty and disatachment that she's grown up in that has had a knock on effect to cause her early symptoms of OCD
Hester has grown up within financial privilege- stemming from her dads side of the family, mainly her aunt who now has a larger control over the family business after their dad dies (Hesters grandad)- although her dad is also still involved. Hester has grown up not fully understanding the lives of others and their financial struggles, as she's been spoiled throughout her childhood with the most expensive and high end toys and clothes. She views expensive things and fancy clothes as something normal and common- she is still young and Nieve and has a slight immature side to herself that we see in sections of the play.
Hester is a very lonely person and has been ever since her parents split up. She never really got to know her mother that well, but has a great relationship with her dad although she's always felt as if there's a part of her looking for something to fill the space her mother should of taken up within her, but obviously has never filled it. She's not an open character and masks how she feels with her confident and cocky persona- even when she's really nervous.
Nelson was her grandads name, which is why she called her rabbit nelson and so when her rabbit died she wanted to hold onto a small part of her grandad so kept his foot and it then became lucky to her because she relates it to her grandad. This is why she gets so frustrated when they throw it around because to her it holds more meaning. Nelsons foot is also related to her OCD, and is used as a crutch to ground her throughout her days- in her mind if she doesn't keep it with her at all times something very bad is going to happen. When she decided she doesn't want it anymore in the end this is her facing her OCD and leaving behind some of the sadness she carries around in her pocket. She is a brave person
- Hester likes to be a show off, so much so that she will sometimes lie or slightly bend the truth to make herself look better and smarter than others. For example she doesn't actually play Ruby, hockey and rowing. She only plays hockey- but lied to make her sporting background seem more impressive instead of just saying she's a hockey player.
