Section 1: Rational
As a performer I have progressed so much over the past 11 units, building massively on not just my acting ability but my understanding of what it's like in the industry and how to reach my long term goals. I now have a better understanding of characterisation and character development when it comes to acting- now actively being able to make the most out of subtext, and understand its importance in relation to delivery and who your character is as a person. This has allowed me to achieve strong character performances and utilising the whole of my physicality when Performing. Before starting the course I feel I only knew my craft on a baseline level- yet now I very much feel equipped with so much more, as I have not just been taught so much more but have experienced so much more; Performing in front of a live audience at multiple different venues and being exposed to multiple different levels of criticism, even that of theatre reviewer! which is something I definitely didn't expect happening before the ages of 17. I've also been given the opportunity to explore script writing, and even have it assessed by a professional script writer; which has now allowed me to discover my love for it and develop a deeper understanding surrounding it. Since joining the course I have also been able learn and develop new skills when acting for screen- which is something I never had to opportunity to train before hand, having a very weak understanding on the difference between acting on stage and on screen. I now have a very strong love for acting on screen, and it's something I want to actively learn even more about and do more of in the future.
Section 2: Project concept
The end of year show I'm partaking in is Radium Girls- a play that explores the radium scandal that happened in the 1920s, leading to the death of the girls using the radium to paint dials for soldiers in the war. The play shows us the ins and outs of this incident making it a very intense and emotional at multiple points within the play, which is why I aim to bring a very real naturalistic performance to the stage- one that can evoke emotion and show the true pain that these women endured. To do this I need to understand the time period in great detail- specifically women in this time period and the patriarchy that came along with this, this is so I can put myself deeper into the characters mindset by understanding what its like to live in their society. The physicality of women in this time period is also something I need to analyse so I can apply it to my performance and characterisation. I will need historical books that cover this topic as it allows me to get a more accurate and in detailed account than online research does. I need to fully read the script and understand the way my character impacts the story. I've watched the Radium girls film, and have also watched amateur renditions of the play- allowing me to se the way in which other actors have characterised my character and what I liked/didn't like about what they did. I can then use this and apply it to my performance.
Section 3: Evaluation
I will evaluate my work through my weekly blogs, discussing a detailed account on my thoughts throughout the process of rehearsals, and what we have achieved within the week. I will also write my own character page about my character, along with a research page about the radium girls themselves. This will allow me to have the most accurate performance and character mindset.
