Unit 8 - Audition day
Tuesday 16th April 2024
Today was our first read through of both the "Radium girls" and "one flew over the cuckoo's nest" scripts. These scripts are both very long, with heavy amounts of dialogue and complicated plot lines therefor we only got half way through both scripts- which although isn't idle, it still let us collectively grasp more of a feel for the scripts individually. The characters within both of these scripts are very real, containing a lot of depth and challenge for us all as actors and giving us the opportunity to fully understand and develop are skills when it comes to naturalism.
The read throughs themselves went quite smoothly, although I think collectively everyone struggled a bit with the American accent and understanding the different types of American accents that the characters have depending on were in America their from. This is something that I'll definitely be doing a lot of work and research on as my production role throughout this process is being one of the accent coaches, so its very important that I know the exact type of American accent and how to teach it.

We spent Wednesday doing a run through of our connections play "shout" as on the 24th we go to York and have our run of it at "York theatre royal". Personally I feel as if the run through was a bit messy and needs some re going over, especially the transitions as since our home performance they have all just become a little bit messy again and un polished. This does make me a little bit nervous as our York performance is so close, but we were missing a few of our cast members, so hopefully that's why things feel a bit untidy. I know personally that I need to keep re going over my lines, and make sure that they're script accurate- as paraphrasing is something I tend to have difficulty with as an actor.

I would class Thursday as an extension of our auditions in a way, as it was another opportunity to show what we could bring to the projects- being given the task of selecting a scene from one of the scripts that we are more interested in and Performing it to our tutors in a group or pair. I paired up with another actor interested in the same role as me, meaning we were both in similar mindsets on how to approach the scene and could therefor help each other and give each other notes in an effective way that benefited us both. Although we were trying to impress our tutors, it was also a good opportunity to get notes and outward insight on how we had approached the characters- which allowed us to reflect as performers and improve what we had previously done. This was also a test on how we took notes and used them to benefit ourselves, our notes were generally surrounding characterisation and how we viewed the characters- so we went away and fixed this, focusing more on the headspace of the character in that scene instead of just how we were delivering the lines.
